When I got into nonlinear editing, a huge investment had to be made and could only be justified by the fact that the investment would pay off. The technical aspects can be very specific. With the NLE gear there are jagged plateaus where some systems work OK and others not at all for what the user wants.

"Avid Editing" in my understanding has _always_ meant editing film or video on one of Avid Corporation's NLE systems. That is what most intelligent folks might think, but Avid has become a synonym for nonlinear editing, much like Kleenex for tissues, Scotch tape for Cellophane tape, Xerox for copying machines.
